Cortado vs Macchiato: Tiny Coffees, Big Opinions
Cortados and macchiatos are two of the smallest drinks on the coffee menu, but they deliver very different experiences. If you’ve ever stared at both and wondered which one will actually suit your taste, this will clear things up.
The Cortado: Balanced and Smooth
The cortado is a quiet overachiever. It blends equal parts espresso and steamed milk to create a smooth, balanced drink. There’s no foam art, no layers, no distractions, just a soft, even flavour where coffee and milk hold hands politely. It’s served in a small glass, usually around 4oz.
Despite its size, it’s not a “short” coffee in taste. It has all the richness of espresso, just softened slightly.

The Macchiato: Espresso, Slightly Softened
The macchiato does the exact opposite. Instead of equal parts, it starts with a full shot of espresso and adds just a dash of steamed milk or foam, just enough to “mark” the coffee. That’s where the name comes from, after all. Macchiato means “stained” or “spotted” in Italian.
It’s strong, sharp, and best for people who like the punch of espresso but want to take the edge off. No milkiness, no creaminess, just a hint of softness.

Which One’s for You?
If you want smooth balance and more sip-ability without sacrificing flavour, go for the cortado.
If you prefer your coffee short and intense, but just need the tiniest nod to softness, a macchiato is your drink.
